Transforming HIV and Nutrition Thinking with Sustainable Solutions in the Apparel and Textile Industry
We thank the companies that joined USAID‘s Sustainable Response to Health, HIV and Nutrition in Central America program. This program, led by FANCAP, strengthens HIV policies in Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Panama. It aims to support these countries on their path to a sustainable future by improving government policies to contain the HIV epidemic, optimizing health and nutrition services, and promoting an environment of respect for human rights, reducing stigma and discrimination against patients.
Coordination and Standards for Quality Services
Thanks to the companies that actively participate, the program coordinates national plans to create standards for HIV services. This involves improving the training of professionals so that they can offer quality services and ensure that these services reach the people who need them most. Its collaboration helps support Central American governments in the sustainable management of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, strengthening national efforts and coordinating initiatives to serve the affected and vulnerable population. In Guatemala, the program has the support of key partners such as the Ministry of Health, human rights organizations, civil society and the Guatemalan Apparel and Textile Industry Association (VESTEX).
The Role of VESTEX
Vestex has played a key role in Guatemala as a pioneer in promoting programs that help companies comply with health and safety regulations in the workplace for more than ten years. Through its Health and Safety programs, it has organized HIV prevention talks and trainings in collaboration with the National HIV Program. This not only ensures compliance with policies, but also protects workers’ health and strengthens the industry’s commitment to workplace wellness and safety.
The Role of the Beneficiary Companies in the USAID Program
Human Resources (HR) plays a crucial role in confirming the agreement with the USAID program. HR is responsible for organizing calls and meetings, ensuring that transformers receive all the necessary information about the program. The companies that subscribe to the project, known as beneficiary companies, benefit directly from the initiatives and resources provided by the program. This commitment reinforces their responsibility to the health and well-being of their employees and communities.
The program’s achievements have a great impact on strengthening health systems and the communities that support them, benefiting not only public health, but also the progress of other Sustainable Development Goals. Beneficiary companies, such as Centexsa II, Gaseco S.A., Brands & Trims, Shin Won S.A., and Vision 21, see improved worker safety, respond to customer expectations, and strengthen their reputations. A safe and healthy work environment can increase employee productivity and overall well-being.
Worker Rights in a Safe Work Environment
Every worker has the fundamental right to be in a safe working environment free from discrimination. By participating in prevention and training programs, companies not only protect the health of their employees, but also promote an environment of respect and dignity. This contributes to creating a work environment where all human rights are valued, strengthening the industry’s commitment to the overall well-being of its workforce.
VESTEX expresses its appreciation to the Guatemalan companies that have accepted the invitation of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) area to participate in the USAID program. The participation of these companies reflects a strong commitment to the health and well-being of their employees and communities. This effort not only strengthens health policies and improves available services, but also contributes to a healthier and more sustainable future for all.
